Brouwerij 't IJ started brewing beers in 1985 when musician Kasper Peterson looked for an outlet for his brewing. He fell in love with the Belgian style beers while he was performing nearby by the southern Dutch borders. Those Belgian style beers were not brewed in Amsterdam yet and so 'Brouwerij 't IJ' was born.
He started his search for the perfect building in Amsterdam and found an old municipal bath house which was not in use in anymore. However, the building had its water supply and drainage system and a wooden windmill next door.
'Brouwerij 't IJ' grew into the best-known brewery of Amsterdam and after 20 years, Bart Obertop and Patrick Hendrikse took over. They continued brewing the high-quality beer that 'Brouwerij 't IJ' is known for.
A new brewery was opened close to the original location in 2013, because demand continued increasing. The old brewery is still is use and produces all beers for consumption in the bar.
