Once a gas factory built to power the streetlights, today the Westergasfabriek is a laid-back stomping ground for culture lovers. Catch an art house movie, stroll around the Sunday Market or just marvel at the 19th-century architecture. It's all there in one of Amsterdam's most beautiful parks.
When the Westergasfabriek reopened in 2003, the complex had undergone a complete metamorphosis. The polluted site was cleaned up and turned into a beautiful park, a real asset for the city. The Westergasfabriek is regarded as a model for redevelopment, far beyond the Netherlands’ borders.
The old Westergas factory has since turned into a cultural haven with bars, restaurants, clubs, galleries and shops. You will find here among others a beer brewery Troost, yoga studio, cinema and even an ice cream shop. And of course the park, a beautiful hidden gem full of private nooks, beautiful landscape and all sorts of sustainable projects. Don't skip Westerpark on your visit to Amsterdam!
