Celebrating the new year brings new opportunities and fresh starts. What are you doing this evening? Amsterdam's list of parties is as long as the Prinsengracht.
Whether you’re a party animal, couch potato, a big spender or on a budget, Amsterdam is an amazing city to ring in the New Year. The Dutch know how to celebrate and the capital is a gezellige (warm and friendly) host for this particular event.
Traditionally, people stay indoors until the hours strikes midnight, inviting friends and family for cosy gathering with lots of food and drinks. People play board games or watch the traditional Oudjaarconference, a comedy/cabaret show aired on television about the events in Dutch society and politics. Then, when the new year is finally here, the party moves outside to light fireworks. Circling around the block, whole families drop by their neighbours, while cheerfully wishing everyone happy New Year (“Gelukkig Nieuwjaar”) and eating oliebollen!
However, many people also go out to celebrate! If you make one last resolution this year, decide to ring in the New Year in one of Amsterdam's lovely neighbourhoods. Just a few suggestions:
>> Awakenings New Year's Eve Special - Westergasfabriek
Awakenings is a world-famous electronic music festival held each year at the industrial and hip Westergasfabriek, just a 12-minute walk from Yays Zoutkeetsgracht and Bickersgracht. This legendary Dutch techno brand explores the forefront of European and world techno.
>> Eat oliebollen at Yays Oostenburgergracht
If you're staying at Yays Oostenburgergracht this year for NYE, don't forget to grab some oliebollen (Dutch doughnuts) at the local shop down the street (Lampen en Boeken). Mr. Hendricus has been living in the neighbourhood his whole life and, owns the books & lamps store for 30 of those. Every year he sells his famous Dutch new year's treats outside his shop and they have been called the best in Amsterdam by locals!
>> Pllek - Amsterdam Noord
Head to Amsterdam North by ferry (easily reached from Central Station, Yays Zoutkeetsgracht and Bickersgracht or from the east of Amsterdam) and celebrate a fun, easy going, evening at Pllek. This funky hangout organises a dinner, bonfire and music and is a great choice for anyone looking for a great time but nothing too hectic.
>> Celebrate in style at The Yays - Crane Apartment
Looking for a truly special way to ring in the new year? Take your experience to the next level and stay in The Yays - Crane Apartment. This 1957 industrial was transformed into a luxury three-storey apartment for up to 4 people, with an amazing view over the IJ river! Located in one of the most charming neighbourhoods of Amsterdam, you can't go wrong! Book your unique stay now!
