Santa Claus has gone back home, but the ''Three Wise Men'' are marching in town! On the 5th of January, the evening before the official holiday on the 6th, this annual tradition originated from Catholic traditions will make its return.
Expect large crowds on this evening waiting for the ''Three Wise Men'' or: ''Three Kings'' to show up on the streets of Barcelona as they greet the children and give them sweets and presents. The Three Wise Men will arrive around 18.30 by boat at Port Vell, and will march their way through the whole city until around 21.30, with the magic fountain of Montjuic as their last stop.
Do as the locals do on this day and get yourself a ''Tortell de Reis'', a ring-shaped cake with candied fruit and filled marzipan or cream. Traditionally, the cake contains two hidden surprises: a dried broad bean, and a tiny figurine of one of the three kings. Whoever gets the lucky piece with a hidden surprise in it gets to wear the paper crown and is the king for the day!
