Building info

The Oostenburger island was built in the 17th century by the Dutch East India Company with the purpose of housing shipyards and warehouses. In an old steam engine factory built there in the early 19th century, Yays Oostenburgergracht now offers 43 apartments just east of the old city centre. If you’ve always wanted to spend the night in a piece of Golden Age history, this is your chance. In the apartments you can find different pictures of photographer Ilya Rabinovich, who was assigned to photograph the STORK terrain in 2000 (STORK terrain project 2000).

Neighbourhood info

The Oostenburgergracht is located in the eastern part of town. Mixing museum classics with nightlife hotspots frequented by the city’s hippest, Amsterdam-Oost truly offers something for everyone. Get your cultural fix at the Tropenmuseum, the Botanical Gardens or the Maritime Museum. If you like your sights to be a little more alive, visit Artis Magistra –the oldest zoo in the Netherlands. Then ease into the evening with a locally brewed beer at Brouwerij ‘t IJ before grabbing dinner in one of the many bars around the Oosterpark - all within walking distance from the apartment.

Welcome to the Neighbourhood

GALLIZIA

This Italian restaurant is the epitome of the Italian way of life: food, wine and family! Gallizia refers to the family name of the owner Tom, who brought Italy to the heart of Amsterdam East. Tasted a wine you wished you could take home? Then we have a surprise for you. The supplier of wines is Monega (which happens to be the wine shop of Tom and just around the corner, Pieter Vlamingstraat 40) which will fill you up with every wine you tasted at Gallizia or any other Italian wine. Kanis en Meiland 3.0

If you are looking for a somewhat trendy cafe along the IJ waterfront, you simply can’t go wrong with Kanis en Meiland 3.0. The location of the cafe has her history in the shipping industry, just like many other venues in this part of Amsterdam. The menu is limited but the great selection of both Dutch and imported beers will definitely make up for that (which is not even necessary). T: +31(0)20 7370674

DE PLANTAGE

De Plantage is housed in an enormous 1870 orangery of the city zoo Artis which has been turned into a high-end cafe restaurant. The restaurant has a monumental feel with high ceilings and a mix of vintage and design furniture. However, it is not just the exterior and interior that will blow your mind, the Mediterranean menu will put a smile on your face as well. T: +31(0)20 76 06 800

ROSA & RITA

The Oostenburgereiland, where Rosa & Rita is situated, has a long and rich history of shipyards. The restaurant is named after two Shell tankers which got their steam engines right here. Pay Rosa & Rita a visit when you appreciate a good but simple menu, a sunlit terrace and warm ambiance. T: +31(0)6–11122373

GALLERY FRANZIS ENGELS

Franzis Engels offers a unique podium for contemporary artists. In a four-storey building, artists display work that often uses minimal materials to deliver maximum impact. Many pieces have more to offer than meets the eye. Some of them you can even touch! A great place to get to know new talent and styles in the always evolving art industry. T:+31 (0)6 31000323
